Happy Orthodox Christmas!

[Bethlehem, West Bank] In Bethlehem Christmas is observed on three separate days. Today we are celebrating Orthodox Christmas. Last night I went to the Church of the Nativity for the service. You wouldn't believe it. It is a wild affair! Three different congregations hold a service at the same time in virtually the same space. You can stand in the Coptic service, rotate 90 degrees and suddenly you are in the Syrian Orthodox service. When you get tired of that, turn 90 degrees again and you are in the Greek service. Three completely different services at the same time. Chaos -- but fascinating chaos! Mini processions from each of the three groups parade through the crowds of people. It was fantastic. Any size, shape, and sound of Christian Orthodox religion was available last night. Excellent!

Coptic Men
For pure regal appearance, I've got to go with the Coptic guys.
They have the most impressive religious wear.
Here the "king priest" blesses the bread. He carefully inspected each piece.
(No offense. I apologize for not knowing the official position of these men.)

Syrian Orthodox man
An Armenian priest.
The Coptic service is directly behind him (note candles).
