Scenes
from Jerusalem's Muslim Quarter
[Bethlehem, Palestine]
Photos
from Jerusalem's Muslim Quarter...

Some
buildings in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem have been taken
over by Jewish residents. This is a residential building owned
by Ariel Sharon, Prime Minister. His house is permanently guarded
by Israeli soldiers; while other occupied buildings have Israeli
flags draped from windows, Sharon's hangs all the way down the
side of the house.

The Jewish
"Wailing Wall" in the foreground. The Islamic Dome of
the Rock behind it. The Western Wall, considered by Jews to be
the only surviving remnant of the Second Temple, is the most sacred
Jewish site in the world. The Dome houses a large rock on which
it is said Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son and from which
Mohammed ascended to heaven.

Near the
Dome of the Rock is Masjid al-Aqsa. The original structure was
erected around 715 AD, and the present look is from 1033 AD.
